Live Free or Die

I've started hanging these around the Bay Area as a challenge to the people who've been ripping up my signs: let's see them do the same to a piece of their own country's history.

For those of you who've been wanting to do this yourselves but were nervous about the legality, consider "Live Free or Die." Let's face it, the day that hanging up signs that say "Live Free or Die." becomes illegal in this country, that's the day that America dies.
For me it's a protest against everything we've just given away: the right to a trial, to be able to face your accuser... the right to say that you come from a country that doesn't commit torture. Although I doubt much of my audience will read any of that into it, I think the freeways look a hell of a lot better with them than without.

If nothing else, people will see that somebody felt they had the right to do this. I figure if I keep hanging signs and people keep seeing them, eventually some of them will start doing it too.

I had a brief appearance on Hannity and Colmes last week. They showed some of my signs, summarized the project and then Hannity said what I'm doing is illegal, costing the taxpayers money and that I was (get this) "trespassing on public property." I said it might be illegal in North Korea or someplace like that but that in America when it comes to political speech, public property means my property and I'm free to do as I please. Then he said I was wrong, I said I was right, Colmes tried to say something but failed and then Hannity finished off by saying I was "too cheap to buy a billboard." Not really what you'd call a stirring debate, but it did result in an inbox full of hate mail from Fox viewers.

One of the letters was so succinct and, in its way, beautiful, it could've passed for poetry:

USA - 848
FB - 665

I like your signs, but am afraid they may be a little unclear about the anti-war sentiment. Have you gotten any feedback on this? Incidentally, my favorite is just the one word: IMPEACH.

Damn fine, Scarlet. Lovely how these right wing-nuts use the only language they are fluent in, and the only sentiment they seem capable of; that of violence and hate. Boy am I persuaded to see their point of view!

Forgot to say it-Happy Birthday to one of the few citizens who are fighting to remain living in a constitutional Democracy!
May your future contain Habeus Corpus.

Happy Birthday Freeway! - Hope you dreams, like a world without Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld etc come true...

Maybe they'd understand your sign if it was in the words of a founding father...Patrick Henry.

"Give me liberty, or give me death".

Live free or die is the new school way of saying an old school value!

I assume you have given the police the information about that death threat? I would take that rather seriously and get the police, FBI and the press involved, if for no other reason than to call attention to the violent fanaticism of these nut jobs.

And these days, it's only a matter of time before one of them snaps and actually DOES come after one of us with a gun (they've already shot doctors).

Great work, and a great idea for the signs.

Good for you, going into the belly of the beast like that. Not only does it take all kinds of self-control, but how did you manage to stay focused? I would have been completely sidetracked by the "trespassing on public property" business. How does one do that? Inquiring minds want to know.

You gotta love the irony that some jerk too lily-livered to put his name on a letter would call you a coward!

It's pretty obvious who the real cowards are. It's only too bad that not all of them can't be sent packing this November. Keep up the good work!

Oh Scarlett! I congratulate you on your graciousness in the face of stupidity.

Stupidity, thy name is Hannity. (Colmes, BTW is not an acutal person, but a cardboard cutout positioned behind a desk, occasionally near Sean-boy.)

I too want to add my voice encouraging you to contact the police with the bullet boy's email. I'm all for a screaming match with the other side, but a death threat is entirely different.

Happy Birthday!

Scarlet -

I hope you notified the authorities of the threatening emails and notified the senders IP as well. Death threats are no joke.

I admire your work more than I can say.

I count no less than 4 direct threats in that email. It is an act of terrorism. Send it to the FBI. Maybe they can ship the little fucker to gitmo.

Love your work, btw, and happy birthday. Also, props to whoever's been putting up the impeach bush signs across I-40 in Durham.

I've been keeping tabs on all of the happenings with freeway blogger, but I've never really done anything. I really admire you and all the people who post these signs on the highways of America. I've never really seen any in New Jersey. Maybe I'll be the first one here to do it. Keep up the great work.

If somebody killed Joan Rivers I for one would not shed a tear.

Mel Gibson for President in 2008.

PS/ Boycott Hollywood!! Hollywood is destroying America--don't buy the bullshit.

Since Joan Rivers calls for the death of Mel Gibson, I will not be sad if some patriot finished her and all her kind off tomorrow.

Scarlett, I wish you would've let folks know to watch the show when you were on.Very cool, even if it was Faux. Report the threat, and always be cautious, these people are freakin' nuts.

I'm not worried that the signs are illegal, I'm just always chicken to stick around to get the photos. :) But, I wish you could've seen the Secret Service pulling down the signs on I-96 last week in MI for chimpy's stumpin' tour. Heh heh.

Hannity is right, you are a cheap bastard. Just save your welfare checks or your allowance from mommy
and buy a billboard. Nice job on the 'death threat'. Sock puppetry.
