Really, Really Big Sign

Found this gigantic piece of cardboard, about 7' x 15', in a dumpster outside an auto body shop. Took it home, slapped a coat of latex on it, hit it with the overhead then traced and painted it. The whole process took about half an hour and used about fifty cents worth of materials.

In some respects, big signs are easier to place than small ones as their size and weight tend to keep them stable, especially if there's a bit of a breeze to hold them against the fence. Never try to work against the wind, especially with large signs. Hanging this sign required a twenty foot walk from my truck, placing the sign directly over two long bungees hooked to the bottom of the fence and then simply stretching the bungees up and out to each side. It took literally less than twenty seconds.

Here's what it looked like at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. It was still up an hour later.

God Damn, that's a big-ass sign!

A total waste of time and effort. People who agree, agree and the others are repulsed by your stupidity.

Great work. The stupid idiots who have a permanent hard-on for war (like the previous poster) won't be swayed, but thousands of people just need to be reminded that they're not alone, since the bought-and-paid for whore media won't tell them the truth. The "war" isn't even a war, it's an illegal occupation of another country.

That's wonderful! It would definitely get my attention, especially in rush hour. Let us know how long it stays up. You know all the repukes driving by have instant panty wedged up their asses when they see it. Brilliant!

No one can be repulsed by your stupidity, for you are not stupid. Time and effort well spent. The blogger who called you stupid is the stupid one.

Excellent! Keep up the good work. It's not stupidity, it's not repulsive, it keeps people's attention on the war, and just might make them think about doing something to help end it sooner.

Re: "Total waste of time and effort..."

Well then, I guess that's half an hour and fifty cents right down the drain. Not to mention two bungee cords I'll probably never see again...

This Iraq war is what's repulsive. The death and maiming of our troops in a war started by a freak/fake president on a power trip is what's repulsive. The deaths of innocent men, women, and children is repulsive. Children with their arms and legs blown off is repulsive. And people who are pro bush and his hideous war, yet sit on their fat asses in front of their computers instead of enlisting to fight for "their" cause are repulsive.

Every sign posted has four messages:

1. What it says
2. "Somebody cares"
3. "You Should too"
4. "You can do something too"

Long after the arm-chair "patriots" have peeled the faded "never forget 9-11-2001" magnets from their hummers we'll still be reminding them the sacrifice of thousands of dead children had nothing to do with 9/11.

I used to think this was a great idea. Not any more.

I now think it is a bad idea. First, I think it just further polarizes the electorate. That is not a good thing. You guys in the left blogosphere (actually pseudoLeft) do not realize that your aim should not be to antagonize the white voter, but to get him on your side. You don't do that by directly attacking the ideas you are against. You go against it sideways.

And you have to go with ideas that directly affect and improve the lives of those average white suburban voters. They after all are the vast majority.

Drop the war thing. I am against the war, but direct antagonization is not the way to win this battle and turn America to the Left. That is what you want, is it not? I mean, this is not just about having someone to hate, is it? Now, I think it is OK to hate. But I think that your hate needs to be focused and controlled.

go with healthcare and immigration. Those issues are true left issues. Healthcare is obvious, but the pseudoLeft blogosphere is ignoring it.

And as far the war goes, as soon as the Democrats get in power, they will set up a war against supposed genocide in darfur, right? And you will support it, right? Cuz your leaders told you to, just like the GOP leaders told all those commuters the Iraq war was OK. And then THEY will post signs on the freeway saying the Darfur war against genocide is a Lie. Yellowcake genocide, anyone?

Also, fighting against mass immigration that lowers wages is a true leftist idea that would find acceptance among white suburbanites.

Also, you need to couch your message hidden in entertainment. Direct messaging about issue, like this sign, is just going to trigger an automatic response. You have to hide the messsage. You are not hiding the message.

And you need to go much broader. Instead of coming out against Iraq war, come out against all offensive wars, period. That requires putting this war and other wars in context and showing what they all have in common. Of course, doing that would not help the Democrats in getting the Darfur war underway. And that is why this anti war push by the PseudoLeft is so narrow bore. Right? LOL!

You have to go much broader in your scope.

I have tried, albeit clumsily, to do this in my in-progress documentary, Homo Sapiens Americanus. You can see early drafts of some of it here: http://www.leftwingmediamachine.blogspot.com

Oh, and as for the PseudoLeft blogosphere, I got to this article from DU, where I now read, and can no longer post. I was banned from DU because I was a true leftist.

Further to my above comments, one reason why white majority suburban and rural Americans have turned away from the left and leftist ideals is that the people who are promoting these leftist ideas are not people like themselves. When the left stopped being about leftist economics promoted by a middle-aged machinist/farmer with a butt-crack and overalls, and started being about social lssues and environmentalism promoted by a young homosexual/longhair etc., that when America started turning right.

Instead, leftists here in America are (or are seen as) anti-traditionalists, such as gays, or are young people, or are highly educated.

THere is a reason why Bush adopted a fake accent. See his old interview video from the early 90s. It was posted on DU in 2004. He had to speak as a man of the majority in order to win.

YOU have to speak as men and women of the majority in order to win.

As long as Leftists are seen as people from the fringe, solid Leftist-economics ideas like single-payer, progressive taxation, etc will contine to be rejected.

If you want to make America better, take a page from Bush. Act like the people. Wolves in sheep's clothing always do get fat.

And, please, do not bother with ancedotal rebuttal/responses ("hey, I'm a plumber with a butt crack, and I freeway blog, damn it!"). It's all about the trend, not the specifics.

Hey Anonymous, I'm a white voter who's not at all "antagonized" by signs pointing out the wrongness of the invasion of Iraq. How do I fit into your long-winded diatribe?

Anonymous said...

dea, read the last paragraph of my 2nd post.

Remember: Reading is FUNDAMENTAL!

Here's an "ancedotal" response: you got banned from DU for being a know-it-all ass..take your "pseudoleft" bs, roll it up real tight, put a little lube on it and place it deep between your cheeks. Nothing more annoying than some douche on the web that thinks their opinion is all.

And you pseudoLefties are hypocrites. You only follow your forum rules ("no personal attacks" etc) when it comes to banning righties and trueLefties. When pseudoLefties attack, that is just great with you. And you show that with your OWN post attacking me.

And again, we see how the PseudoLeft and Rightwing blogosphere are really more about having someone to attack and hate, and to gang up on, as opposed to really doing something about helping america.
The blogs, right and left, are a dysfunctional mess, exploited both by the overclass parasites AND the forum owner-parasites.

Great ideas, psuedoleft... You should take your ideas and paint 'em REAL BIG and stick them over a freeway.

My signs say what I want them to.

anyone else notice that the story on DU that linked to this page has disappeared from their Greatest Threads page? Skinner et al., do not want to hear dissenters.

how do you reconcile my two posts above with bush kisser?
I realize you are not into thinking much, but sometimes it is fundamental.

Clue for you: as I said above, I am a leftist. THat means I want higher taxes on the rich, single payer healthcare, and a strong social safety net.

If you had read my posts above (and if you had a 3 digit IQ) you would realize that I am a LEFTIST. Not a pseudoLeftist like you DUers, but a real leftist.

Freewayblogger said...

Okay, now that we're all set on what you call yourself, what do you do?

Apologies, long-winded "leftist" anonymous poster. My eyes glazed over after reading the first few paragraphs of your first diatribe. I stopped then to post my question of where and how I, a white voter, fit into your worldview.

Now I have another question - what color is the sky in your world? You should try visiting us in the real world sometime. You'll know you're here if you look up and the sky is blue.

Oh, and do answer FWB's question too. I'd love to know what actions you've taken to back up your beliefs.

Yeah, I got that impression -- that political activists (right and left) are not about reading anything more a paragraph or so. That says a lot about the moribund Left here in America.

My bad. THat is why i have to make a documentary. Your feeble little minds cannot handle all those words.

I see YOU have that attention span problem, too. I research, and I write. I create memes. That should be apparent from reading my blog I linked and from watching the videos I created.

Oh, that's right. Too long for you to read. And your Dear Ideological Leaders did not tell you to read that.

Freewayblogger said...

Sorry dumpsterbaby, I didn't recognize you as a writer, much less a meme-creator. Looking forward to seeing your documentary, and hope it works out better as a venue than telling other people what to put on signs.

Since when are these leftist Ideals? They sound like pseudo Democrat al gore ideals to me. The middle class must be made uncomfortable on a daily basis for leaving foreign policy in the hands of elite policy makers who don't give a damn about American kids lives. We'll take up your whiney ass 'leftist' single payer healthcare after we bring the soldiers home - if you were a 'true leftist' you'd understand that foreign policy always trumps domestic sniveling. See you on the highway overpass.

bitsoys said...

Do not retreat, but instead step up the antiwar messages, whether they be on the overpass or the letters-to-the-editor page. Otherwise, the preponderance of right-wing messages will be even more overwhelming than they already are. Those citizens uncertain about war or imperialism or injustice, when faced with an incessant barrage of pro-war or The Government Is Looking Out For You-type messages, may very well lean in that direction simply because of perceived pressure from the pseudo-majority.

I say: Keep the debate going. Make our presence known on the highways and elsewhere, 'cause we sure won't be investing in many TV commercials any time soon.

Ive been on the net for years. and not even I think The war in Iraq is a true war. I think they have to fight it there rather than here. but how can you fight a war on terror when your leaders do nothing for years to check ports or borders. to be sure no WMDs are working their way into the USA. I dont like repugs. And Im ot a real supporter of the Dems. if they could find something to stand up and yell about it would be nice. they need a back bone. I dont support bush never have. the man is pure evil. 4 elections Rigged in 4 electios does not a democracy make. It makes a pretty good dictatorship. Or police state. In my view. the USa is not safe. from those raghead swines in the mideast The only good arab is one thats not breathing. I dont like them and never have. Note clearly I am not jewish. You dont have to be. you only have to be smart to notice that one. I think the terrorists who will atack us next are here now with WMDs. They got in over the US mexico border. how do I know this. Im also a psychic. The USa should have closed the borders ages ago. to prevent incursion by these ragheaded swines. but they did nothing. Now they make overtures at it. How stupid is that. Well at least its something. finally. kudos to the sign maker. any war is wrong if fought for illegal reasons. and greed over truth. and I will leave my name James

Anonymous said...

James, if you were really intelligent as you say you are, you wouldn't have just provent how ignorant you really are. Name calling belongs in playgrounds, if there at all. The fact is that you as well as I don't know who did what on 9-11, but from what we have been fed, it wasn't the Arabs, you idiot. Supposively it was The AlQueda from Afghanistan. I'd say get it right, but unfortunately no one has yet.
And to Mr. "If you had a 3-digit IQ you would have gotten my comment" you too as well, if you were so intelligent and the sign so repulsive from it's stupidity, you would have left your name. Considering how smart you come off sounding, I'm considering asking for your autograph. Unfortunately, I can't stand cocky jackasses like yourself that like to preach but can't quite comprehend.

The guy is no leftist or intellect...he's a troll, who comes to hijack the thread. To distract. He's probably being paid with our "psuedo-leftist tax dollars.
Now about the original subject....I see the freeway blogging catching on in my city, and I'm lovin' it. Plan on getting some more signs up myself soon. I've gone zip ties in the past but after watching the video ( which I loved by the way and will be forwarding to many friends) I'm going bungee next time. Keep up the good work folks....if we're drawing trolls like the big blogs and radio shows we must be doing something right...er or left...um, yea like that.
