Texas Scares Me

I had forty hours to make it from San Diego to Crawford in order to speak at Camp Casey. Made it in 30, but had to keep the blogging light, which was just as well 'cuz Texas scares the crap out of me. Between the heat, preponderance of religious propaganda, cops and Confederate flags, let's just say I didn't feel much at home. Made the mistake of getting out of my car in Midland and saw the above screed against homosexuality and Witchcraft on a car in the parking lot outside the Wal-Mart. It didn't take more than ten minutes or so before I decided that ALL sex should be banned in Midland. Try eating less and exercising more folks... maybe then sex won't seem so frightening.

I put these up using binder clips at the dead ends of frontage roads, keeping the truck parked directly in front of me as a blind. It doesn't surprise me that I don't get any pictures from West Texas... it's not a place you'd want to get caught doing this. For those brave souls who might be considering freewayblogging West Texas, I suggest using ladders against the backs of billboards. At night.

The Awesome Power of the Overhead Projector

Found this lovely pile of cardboard behind a furniture store in Sacramento. Using nothing more than paint, duct-tape, a boxcutter and an overhead projector, I was able to turn it into this:

All in all it didn't take more than eight or nine hours of work, (if you want to call tracing, painting, and listening to music "work,") and I did it alone. Along with the awesome power of the Overhead Projector I can't emphasize enough the power of simply one person working alone. I've posted close to a thousand signs on this weblog, and three quarters of them were done by about six of us. I think "Organizing" has been the clarion call of the left for so long now that it's paralyzed us as individuals. To those of you out there who've been wanting to do this but waiting to "get together" with other people before giving it a try, stop waiting: Just do it.

Put paint on cardboard and then put the cardboard up where your fellow citizens can see it. Send me a picture. So long as it's non-commercial political speech, you can say whatever you want. This is America.

WE WON!

Am proud to announce that our film, "How to Reach 100,000 People for Under a Dollar" won the jury prize at the Huffington Post Contagious Festival. Special thanks to Rob Corsini, who shot and edited the film and to all of you who passed it along to friends.

If you haven't seen it yet, please do. It's about two minutes long and by the end you'll know how to do what I do. It isn't magic... just cardboard and paint.
