I lived in the OC for several months in 2005. Beautiful place, awful people. Still VERY Republican. In fact I got fired from a job in which I was meeting and exceeding the demands of the position, in part because it became known that I was a Democrat who didn't care much for Bush.

Seriously.

There is something almost otherworldly about OC. Beyond the usual narcissism of wealth and the "another shitty day in paradise" ethos, there's something that just seems unrelenting in the emphasis in looking good and having nice things. It's not just that materialism and consumerism are more prevalant - they're practically all-pervasive - like gambling is in Vegas.

I practically grew up there, when there were actual orange groves everywhere, but escaped from behind the orange curtain somce 16 years ago now.

appreciate your work, freeway blogger.

I'm really surprised at what I'm reading from fellow 'progressives'.
Since when do we paint all people in one geographical location with such a wide brush?
Is it fair to say that all New Yorkers are obnoxious and pushy; all San Fransicians are gay? Of course not! I live in Orange County and have been a card-carrying Democrat since the late 1970's when I voted for Jimmy Carter.
To imply all people of Orange County are shallow and materialistic Republicans is absurd. Where do you think a major portion of Orange County's population comes from? You got it, liberal Los Angeles County. So please wake up, travel outside of Irvine and Newport and come see the liberals sometime, and enough of the Orange County bashing. We all want the war to end. This type of conversation is simply counter productive .

Sorry LAR, I should've been a little more clear. I didn't mean to imply that ALL people from Orange County are shallow, materialistic Republicans. That would be silly. There are all sorts of people living in Orange County. What I meant to say is that the entire ETHOS of Orange County is bathed in an overwhelming sense of shallowness and materialism... dripping, figuratively speaking, from the very walls of the place.

I've been all over this country and damn near all around the world and what I say stands.
