Great posting on many levels - clever message, seen by millions over a long period of time.

This is what it's all about!

AWESOME! I should post one of these on a 100 degree, high humidity day here in Virginia.

Very clever, darling :)

So true.. Great freeway blog. These should be all over the country...

I think I might be upset if my child read that and you spoiled the whole Santa thing.

But, thanks for fighting the good fight.

okay, fellow bloggers...
here's a message from (yes!) north pole, alaska...
If we can freeway blog up here, why can't you?
I mean, we do it at sub-zero temperatures, and when there's almost no daylight, and then also when there's swarms of mosquitos, galore, in the summer, amidst irate, right-winged residents who like the high-paying oil-related jobs up here.
'let's git 'er done!'I say!
I spent 30 minutes this morning during our "rush hour" in a guantamano bay outfit with a couple of signs tied to some trees. It didn't take a lot of my time...i hope it helped some commuters think about this immoral thing that our government has endorsed.
Can we all just do a little bit more to move this forward? I mean, can you be just a little bit more inconvienced in order to help out?

Man-Made global warming is the biggest hoax in the world. In 20 years, you will look like a fool.

Freewayblogger said...

Yeah, nothing more humiliating than actually speaking out for something you believe in, eh anonymous?

Anonymous said...

Great sign! I will make one and put one up in downtown Los Angeles!
Make Levees Not War

Anonymous said...

yes, we'll all look like fools as the waters rise, and the polar bears drown, and the droughts increase at the same time as the floods don't recede. The levees are breaking and the tornados whirl by but we still fiddle away while Rome dies.

When you stop and think about it, there is no better way to get the message out there to thousands and thousands of people - and it's FREE! Look at the $money$ spent on billboards and television and people don't even notice those media messages, because they're generally numb to those outlets. But freeway signage - especially stark black & white - gets right in people's faces on their commutes, invades their autotopia, forces them to read and think. And it's FREE! And it's EASY!
Keep up the great work, Freeway Blogger, and I'll do my best to blog the freeways of San Diego too.
~peace~

"Man-Made global warming is the biggest hoax in the world. In 20 years, you will look like a fool."

You wanna apply Pascal's wager to that?

Anonymous said...

Not a bad sign, but the poles of our planet don't have anything to do with the weather up (or down) there. So even if the climate around the North Pole turns balmy, it will still be the North Pole.

Anonymous said...

Great message (and clever sign!), but bad delivery. I don't think putting up giant banners on public property (presumably without permission or a permit) is the way to go to get your message across. Think of it this way-- if someone put up a similar banner proclaiming global warming to be a myth, would you celebrate their right to free expression, or would you want the proper authorities to take it down?

Momcat said...

Anonymous, why do you say global warming is a hoax?

Momcat said...

Anonymous, why do you think global warming is a hoax? Are you also a Creationist who dismisses evolution?

Freewayblogger said...

The fact that you can use public property for the free expression of political opinion is one of the things that makes American democracy great.

If I saw someone putting up a sign saying that global warming was a myth I'd damn well celebrate the fact that at least someone gets it: if you want to get a message out to people, signs on the freeways are the way to go. They don't cost a thing, they reach tens, if not hundreds of thousands of motorists and, most of all, doing it is a hell of a lot of fun.

I really don't see any downside to it.

Was that in Berkeley on Sunday? I thought I caught a glimpse of it last weekend...

Freewayblogger said...

Yup. University Ave overpass. Up for at least seven hours at 10,000 cars per hour.

Mojo said...

Very brave. Posting something that almost everyone believes takes real guts. Fight the good fight and all that. Give me a break.

What takes guts is speaking out against the junk science that GW theory is based upon. Speaking out against the sheer hypocracy of people like Al Gore with his film full of blatent lies, sanctimoniously preaching to the world while making a mint on bogus carbon offsets and using 20 times more power at just one of his many homes than an average family uses.

Freewayblogger said...

Especially when you do it on a comment-board. That takes super guts... super-duper guts even.

The basic mean-spiritedness of the religion of environmentalism is more than evident in these nasty signs you're all applauding. Your whines add nothing constructive to the world .. but they sure do put the Big Bucks in your Goracle's deep, deep pockets.

Freewayblogger said...

Wow, a conservative who apparently hates people making money! I salute you Comrade!

(He's right about the mean-spiritedness of religion made manifest by signhanging too: that Martin Luther was one mean-ass son of a bitch...)

Anonymous said...

To Mojo and Anonymous: If those of us that believe that global warming is real are wrong, what are the consequences? If YOU are wrong, then the consequences are devastating.

Do either of you recycle?

Anonymous said...

I assume all of the people who claim that global warming is real drive fuel efficient cars. I know for a fact that the Freewayblogger does NOT (his truck is definitely not a hybrid).

Momcat - how's your Prius? If you own one, at least you're being consistent. If not, why don't you own a hybrid, etc?

Freewayblogger said...

Thanks for the plug, anonymous. That's right folks, my truck is definitely not a hybrid. It's a relatively fuel-efficient 4WD I bought while clothing people in the northwest Sierra Madres, more details here:

http://www.taketothehills.org

If you've got a decent 4WD vehicle you don't mind scratching up a bit, and would like doing something useful with it, drop us a line!

Anonymous said...

That's great that you did that in the past, but what are you doing NOW to combat global warming that you apparently believe is man made? Why don't you get a more fuel efficient car?

Freewayblogger said...

See photos above. I'm combating global warming with cardboard, paint, rhetoric, semiotics and the good ol' first amendment, and ain't nobody gonna stop me.

Least of all you.

Anonymous said...

You are doing NOTHING to stop global warming!!!!!! You're like a parent who says "Do as I say, not as I do"... how hypocritical of you! Please tell us why you DON'T buy a more fuel efficient vehicle? What's stopping you? Either you care about what you believe to be anthropogenic global warming or you don't! Get a HYBRID and stop being a HYPOCRITE!

Freewayblogger said...

Gee anonymous, I thought "Consumer Choice" was like the Holy Grail to you conservatives (after all, it's pretty much all you have to offer.)

Sad to see you abandoning your highest principles (and let's face it, they are,) over a little temperature shift.

Anonymous said...

You missed the point - I'M not the one railing against consumer choice! I don't care what the average American drives! I have a problem with hypocrites like YOU who claim that global warming is man made yet continue to drive non fuel efficient cars. Why don't YOU have a hybrid? You're the one who thinks that global warming is man made - you're the one who continues to (according to your beliefs) contribute significantly to global warming. There are plenty of fuel efficient SUVs/trucks, etc that get better mileage than your current truck - please let us know when you will be upgrading. If you won't be upgrading, why not?

Anonymous said...

C'Mon Freeway Blogger. Why won't you answer anonymous's question??
Are you afraid? What are you scared of?

Freewayblogger said...

Where does it say global warming is man made?

Anonymous said...

Oh! You don't believe global warming is man made? Sorry for my assumption! At least you're right on this issue! Good stuff!

Freewayblogger said...

What the F_ck are you talking about? Where does it say anything about global warming being man made? Or, for that matter, where does it say anything about it not being man made? It's talking about kids, and Santa, and the North Pole. Jesus Christ lad, get a grip!

Anonymous said...

What's the point of the signs then?

Freewayblogger said...

To let drivers know that telling kids there's no north pole is probably going to be more difficult than telling them there's no Santa Claus.

Anonymous said...

Why will there be no North Pole and do you believe it?

Freewayblogger said...

Read the fucking story, asshole.

hi! i'm not the freakin' conservative "anonymus". my name is gregor i live in germany. my question is: why is it that so many americans seem to be so hot for hybrid cars when it comes to fight climate change? don't get me wrong - i think hybrid technology is a good invention etc.
but the amazing thing is that american cars need SO much more fuel than european ones - even "hybrid versions". everyone i know is wondering how u guys over there (over the ocean ;-) can afford such expensive cars. i mean cars in europe mostly have no hybrid system or whatever but run with about HALF of the amount of fuel - motors are just more efficient. you don't need that much cylinder capacity... don't you want to save the money? What the f*** is the point in wasting all the fuel??
and by the way: get yourself a health care system! ;-)

Freewayblogger said...

Hi Gregor, we drive big cars because the people on our televisions told us if we drove big cars people would like us more. Seriously.

Carbon pollution due to vehicles is a big cause of increasing temperature of the earth that further causes global warming.
