Tales of the Beltway Blogger

"I love freewayblogging in Washington DC: instead of just writing to a congressperson or senator, I get to write to all of them. Ambassadors, heads-of-state, cabinet secretaries, generals, defense contractors... they've all got to use the Beltway. Sometimes I like to leave personal notes:

One of these days I'm gonna get an overhead projector, but for now I just use freehand and stencils. For those of you just starting out, I suggest using stencils: you can get them at art supply stores or just make them yourself with cardboard and a razor.
Like the Freewayblogger says, the trick is to make a lot of signs, stick them in your car and then just go driving around. With bungee cords, duct-tape, hammer and nails you can stick signs up pretty much anywhere.
When I see a good spot I take the next exit and figure out how to get there from the back: I never pull over on the roadway. Sometimes it takes a little exploring... wandering around through bushes and trees, negotiating terrain... the sense of being on a mission. How often do we get to do that in our day-to-day lives? Not nearly enough.

By the time I get home I know that tens of thousands of people have seen what I had to say, instead of just fences and trees. Like Freewayblogger says: Everyone should do this.

Hello, Beltway Blogger! I am in the area too and can't freewayblog effectively, so I miniblog - I carry around small mailing labels that say IMPEACH and put them on lampposts, parking meters, newspaper receptacles, wherever is public. They stay. Would like to invite others to do this as well...!

I've seen those all over DC saying "Bush Terrifies Me"

Outstanding.

I don't understand the point of the cardboard. Wouldn't applying the paint directly to the bridge be a lot more permanent?

Cardboard is politics. Spraypainting other people's property is vandalism.

The cardboard is a hell of a lot safer, too. No need to dangle over the edge of an overpass to put up a cardboard sign.

Great work! The cardboard is easy to work with, safe, and as mentioned above, it's not vandalism.

The other thing about cardboard is that you can attach it to trees or wrap it around poles.

To ALL the freeway Bloggers; PLEASE QUIT USING NAIS ON TREES!!!!! If you want to hang signs, get yourself a spool of FULLY ANEALED, UN-PLATED steel wire from the local hardware store. You can use it to hang stuff on trees, fences, sign posts, etc. as fast or faster than duct tape or nails( if you can use a bread tie to seal your lunch bag, you have the physical streantgh (?) to use this stuff.) With a good, sharp, pair of plieres, you shouldn't need a pair of gloves to use it; and the best part is ( at least up here in the rust belt) since the wire is totally un protecteted, it nwill rust away and return to the Earth long before it can damage the tree ( whereas nails thruo the bark, into the living part of the tree? OWOWOWOWOOOOO!!!) Just my 1/2 cents worth. P.A.H.
